Cold fronts:

from: http://vathena.arc.nasa.gov/curric/weather/hsweathr/fronts.html

Notice how the clouds form in front of the cold front and rise as the cold air moves into the warmer air. The precipitation begins to fall ahead of the cold front line. This type of collision can cause more severe storms which are relatively shorter in duration.

Warm fronts:

Notice how the clouds form over the colder air as the warm air slides across the colder air. This type of collision usually causes a more gentle precipitation which is longer in duration.
